Vrindavan is the holy place where Lord Krishna spent his glorious childhood days. The very word Vrindavan brings in the image of the lord. The holy land is situated in the Mathura district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The place has great significance for the Hindus and is considered as a major pilgrim site as lord Krishna has spend a large part of his life here and the place is adorned with more than 5000 shrines. The town is located on the banks of river Yamuna; it holds mythological significance as well.
One of its oldest surviving temples is the Govinda Dev temple, built in 1590, with the town founded earlier in the same century. The interiors of the temple are adorned with beautiful paintings depicting Lord Krishna and Radha. Once a seven-storied structure, the temple reflects a perfect amalgamation of the Hindu, Muslim and Western styles of architecture. It is the most sacred place for the vaishnavas and the Hindus who worship the cowherd boy Krishna.
In Vrindavan there are 12 forests, 5 on one bank of the river Yamuna and the other 7 are on the other bank of the river. Some forests are still very pure; some are protected tulsi wood forests. The banke Bihari temple is the most spiritual temple of Vrindavan. It is the most important temple in Vrindavan. Visited by millions of devotees every year, Shree Banke- Bihari Temple was built in 1864. The image of the Lord enshrined inside the temple was discovered by Swami Haridas, an ardent devotee of the Lord. Some of the other known temples in Vrindavan are Madan Mohan Temple, Radha Vallabh Temple, Shah Ji Temple and Ranga Ji Temple. All the temples holds majestic significance and story linked to all. The town is very near to the birthplace of the lord that is Mathura.
You can feel the spiritual and religious essence once you touch the land of Vrindavan. It is capable of purifying the soul of the pilgrims. There is the iskcon temple as well. The holy river makes the town appear more pretty and pure.
