"The National Akademi of Music, Dance and Drama"
An autonomous organisation funded by the Government
devoted to the furtherance of the performing arts of India the Akademi
bestows honours annually on outstanding artists in the field of performing
arts. The Akademi arranges performances by renowned veterans as
well as by talented artists of the younger generation, through training
programmes, award of scholarships, documentation etc.The Akademi is managed
by a General Council, supported by the Executive Board, which exercises
direction and control over the affairs of the Akademi.
Teaching/Training Activities
The Akademi runs two teaching institutions Kathak
Kendra (New Delhi) and Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Akademi (Imphal)
- for Training in Kathak dance and music and Manipuri dance and allied
arts.The Akademi also looks after the management of the Rabindra Rangshala
in New Delhi.
Kathak Kendra : Keeping the tradition up
The Kathak Kendra is one of the leading institutions for training in
Kathak dance set up with the objective of training proficient
dancers committed to pursuing the arts as a profession. Many dancers
trained at Kathak Kendra have received acclaim both for solo dancing
and for their choreographic work. Eminent masters of Kathak dance and
Hindustani music including Pandit Lacchu Maharaj, Shambhu Maharaj, Sunder
Prasad, Kundanlal Gangani, Mohanrao Kallyanpurkar, Mumudini Lakhi, Birju
Maharaj, Durga Lal, Hanz Ali Khan, Mustaq Hussain Khan, Mohinuddin and
Aminuddin Dagar, Siddeswari Devi and Naina Devi have taught here.
Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal
A constituent unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the Jawaharlal Nehru
Manipur Dance Academy is the leading teaching institution of Manipuri
dance. It offers several comprehensive courses in Manipuri dance, music
and allied arts like Lai Haraoba and Thang-ta. The courses are designed
as a foundation for professional artistes. The institution has teachers
of eminence on its staff and a Production unit which strives to enrich
the Manipuri repertoire through experimental work.
